PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for exchanging data between two hosts with respect to an Internet phone, UMTS application or multimedia communication. SOLUTION: Two hosts which communicate with each other, belong to private networks 1, 2 having their own private address spaces, respectively. The networks 1, 2 include network address translators (NAT) 3, 4, 5, 6 and proxy servers 7, 8 accessible from a public address space. Each host transmits a path-coupled signaling message towards the proxy server of a network of the opposite host. The direction is determined on the basis of information from a protocol for initializing connection. A public IP address is allocated to each of the hosts by the NAT of a network of the corresponding host through which the path-coupled signaling message passes. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
