摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize excellent display characteristics in a transflective liquid crystal display element using a vertical alignment mode. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element is equipped with a first substrate having a reflective display region and a transmissive display region and a second substrate placed opposite to the first substrate and having protrusions on the opposing surface, and is constructed by forming a liquid crystal layer between the substrates. In the second substrate, a transparent electrode is formed on the protrusions. Liquid crystal molecules constituting the liquid crystal layer are aligned in a direction nearly vertical to the respective substrates in the state with no applied voltage. Further, an insulation layer to make thickness of the liquid crystal layer of the transmissive display region and that of the reflective display region mutually different is formed on the first substrate, and a recessed part is formed on the insulation layer corresponding to the transmissive display region. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
