PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to ensure favorable starting and stopping capabilities while dampening engine vibration at the time of start and stop. SOLUTION: At the time of the start and stop of an engine 11, intake pump loss increasing control is performed. This intake pump loss increasing control decreases cylinder inside pressure of an initial stage of an intake stroke to increase a pump loss by lagging opening timing of an intake valve 28 through a variable intake valve timing mechanism 29. Acceleration of a crankshaft by expansion energy of a cylinder in an expansion stroke at the time of the start and the stop is restrained by the intake pump loss increasing control to dampen the engine vibration. In addition, during the intake pump loss increasing control, the pump loss of the cylinder in an intake stroke may be varied depending on the expansion energy of the cylinder in the expansion stroke and on the engine revolution speed.
