PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable speed control device of an automatic transmission which can execute changed-speed operation coinciding with a driver's intention when an accelerator pedal is suddenly stepped on. SOLUTION: The variable speed control device of the automatic transmission which determines target gear-shift stage from transmission map established according to driving speed of a vehicle and amount of a stepped accelerator pedal is equipped with a vehicle speed sensor which detects the driving speed of the vehicle, an accelerator sensor which detects the stepped amount of the accelerator pedal and a control means. The control means calculates the stepped rate of the accelerator pedal from detected signal from the accelerator sensor and inhibits gear-shift operation at predefined time even though the target gear-shift stage varies from current gear-shift stage and variably controls to the target gear-shift stage after the predefined time elapses in case of the stepped rate of the accelerator pedal being more than the predefined rate.
