PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus control method which accurately performs focus control and satisfactorily records and reproduces information, and also provide an optical pickup device thereof. SOLUTION: An FES balance A in a focus error signal whose signal output is zero when a focus is optimum is measured and stored at an optimum balance measurement step (S3). Then, the FES balance A is read out (S5) for every change T°C of an environmental temperature (S4), and a gain k is updated so that it will be the balance A (S6), and then a corrected focus error signal is generated at a corrected signal generation step.
