PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of executing quick and sure recording processing by causing an optical head to stand by at an optimal position after the end of recording (reproducing processing). SOLUTION: This optical disk device is provided with a stand-by position deciding circuit 27 for detecting the physical characteristics of each area of an optical disk after the end of recording or reproducing processing, and deciding the stand-by position of an optical head 10 according to the detected physical characteristics, and control mechanisms 17, 18, 19, 20 and 25 for controlling the position of the optical head so as to move and stand by. Especially, the optical head is caused to stand by just before the two tracks of an unrecorded area, and the rotational speed of a spindle motor is not changed when a stand-by track position is different from the zone of a recording-finished track.
