PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient method for producing glycolic acid by utilizing the hydrothermal reaction of dichloromethane. SOLUTION: The method for producing glycolic acid comprises filling aqueous dichloromethane prepared by mixing and/or dissolving dichloromethane into acidic to neutral water in a sealed reactor in such an amount as to substantially fill up the reactor with the aqueous dichloromethane in the liquid state at a reaction temperature of 200°C to 250°C and performing hydrothermal reaction at the temperature.
