PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method whereby in the intermittent aeration of wastewater from a methane fermentation system, the quantity of air necessary for a nitration step can be reduced and also the amount of organic matter necessary in a denitrification step can be reduced. SOLUTION: The method for treatment by methane fermentation comprises throwing organic wastes into a methane fermentation tank 1, subjecting the organic wastes to methane fermentation by anaerobic microbes to recover fermentation wastewater, and feeding the fermentation wastewater into an intermittent aeration tank 3 where the fermentation wastewater is subjected to methane fermentation. In the aeration in this method, ammonia nitrogen is converted into nitrite nitrogen by adjusting the time and temperature of the aeration so that the count of ammonia oxidation bacteria in the intermittent aeration tank 3 may be increased and that the count of nitrate oxidation bacteria may be decreased.
