<PICT:1019899/C4-C5/1> An electroluminescent display panel includes electroluminescent material embedded in a layer of dielectric material having the shape of the pattern to be illuminated and disposed between two parallel continuous electrically conductive layers, the regions between the portions of the shaped dielectric layer having a dielectric constant less than that of that layer. The shaped dielectric portion 3 of enamel containing barium titanate are covered and surrounded by glass or transparent enamel dielectric 4 mounted on a sheet metal support 1 with the interposition of a glass or white enamel layer 7 and a conductive transparent tin oxide coating 2a, whereby light incident from the electroluminescent material embedded in material 3 is reflected through the viewing face constituted by a further tin oxide layer 2b and a transparent gloss or enamel layer 8. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the material 3 extends to both the adjacent conductive layers. Other high dielectric constant materials for portions 3 are barium or strontium titanate impregnated epoxy resin or polyester; other low dielectric constant materials for region 4 are polyethylene, gas or vacuum; and other support materials are mica or glass. |
