A high performance cable tie (10) includes an elongate strap (15), and a head (42) extending from one end of the strap (15) . The strap and pawl teeth (35,67) each have convex portions (40,72) which engage one another during insertion of the strap (15) through the head (42). The strap and pawl teeth (35,67) also each have planar portions (37,70) which engage one another to obstruct retraction of the strap (15) from the head (42). The longitudinal spacing of the strap and pawl teeth (35,67) are equivalent. The surface (75) of the pawl (57) between the exit end (52) of the passageway (47) and the pawl tooth nearest thereto has a concave portion which engages the convex portion (40) of the opposing strap tooth (35) when the pawl (57) pivots in response to retraction of the strap (15) from the head (42). This pivoting of the pawl (57) is limited by a heel (77) which engages an inner surface of the head (42).
