A system for detecting lifeforms in a vehicle, e.g. for detecting if a lifeform is trapped inside the luggage compartment, has one or more sensors to monitor parameters associated with lifeforms. These include carbon dioxide sensors, thermal sensors, motion sensors etc. For motion sensors the control system differentiates between passive and active movements, with the active movements independent of the vehicle movements and indicating a lifeform.
