A flying cutting-off machine comprises a saw 1 carried on an arm 4 having one end connected by a pin 8 on an adjustable crank 9 and the other end 5 guided to describe either a straight line or an arc of a circle of relatively large radius so that the cutting edge of the saw, located between the ends of the arm, describes a closed curve D approximating an ellipse or oval, one arc of which intersects the path A of the workpiece while another arc is remote therefrom for the return phase of the saw. The end 5 of the arm may be connected to a straight or curved slide or, as shown, to one end of a lever 6 pivoted at 2 to a frame 12 of the machine. The pin 8 at the other end of the arm is adjustably carried by the crank 9 which is carried by a shaft 10 supported in a bearing 11 adjustable transversely of the path A of the workpiece along a slide 13. The shaft 10 is connected directly or by bevel gearing to a flexible shaft 14 having its other end connected directly or by bevel gearing to a disc 16 engaging the workpiece, which may be flat tube issuing from a profiling machine B. The workpiece is supported by a grooved wheel which may be the last element of the profiling machine. In operation, the size of the disc 16 is selected to have a circumference corresponding to the desired lengths to be cut from the workpiece, and the length of the crank 9 is adjusted to substantially equal the radius of the wheel 16. As the workpiece issues from the profiling machine B, the wheel 16, which is pressed against the workpiece by a spring, causes the crank 9 to rotate and the saw 1, which is driven by a flexible drive 22 from a motor 23 moves in the path D to cut the workpiece and return to its initial position.</p> |
