Surface coating and process for forming it

Surface layer consists of several layers, one layer being a transition layer to a support element. The surface layer comprises a ceramic layer containing a chemically bound metal. The support element is a metallic element and the transition layer contains intermetallic phases made of the metal of the support material and the metal of the ceramic material. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a surface layer comprising applying a ceramic layer to a metallic support element, and carrying out a reaction between the metal of the support element and of the ceramic layer forming the transition layer containing the intermetallic phases.
