The invention relates to an exhaust valve of a two-stroke large diesel engine, which can be lifted and lowered in an axial direction, can rotate about the axis thereof, and which is displaceably mounted with its stem (8) inside a valve housing (9). A lift actuating device, a return device, a rotating device and a damping device, which dampens the end of the opening motion of the exhaust valve, are all assigned to the exhaust valve. Said damping device comprises a damping piston (21), which is connected to the valve stem (8) and which, toward the end of the opening motion of the exhaust valve, can be introduced, due to the action of the lift actuating device, into an associated damping chamber (22) that contains a fluid. The aim of the invention is to provide an exhaust valve of the aforementioned type in which losses of energy are prevented thereby obtaining a reliable valve rotation. To this end, the damping piston (21) that dampens the opening motion of the exhaust valve is provided with at least one flow path (31) that starts from the front face of the damping piston, said front face being located in front in the opening direction of the exhaust valve and protruding into the damping chamber (22). Said flow path discharges in the peripheral area of the damping piston (21) with a direction different from the radial direction.
