Method of manufacturing an one-piece axle body

A one piece axle, eg for a trailer, is made from steel tube by first axial compression of the axle ends using a two part press tool. This increases the wall thickness at the axle ends. The wall thickness is further increased by a rolling process to form the solid axle stubs (1). Round section or square section tube can be used. The tube is first widened by the axial pressing and then reduced by rolling. The tube is heated to 1100 to 1200 deg.C for the forging process.
