An echo cancellation system uses recursive determination of transmit and receive gains (Grt, Get) using a calculated adaptive variable at depending on the return (yt) to direct (xt) signal power ration when the estimated direct signal power (P1t) exceeds a threshold and equal to 1 for lower levels. Includes Independent claims for the procedure used by the system.
