The building (1) is for housing poultry and incorporates several floors (3a-3d) one above the other, together with access arrangements for at least some of the birds to the floors. On each floor are several laying nests (4) and perches (5). The laying nests connect to a central feed belt (25) for eggs (26). Each floor is also provided with a food and drink feed. The building has an exit (6) for birds housed, and this can also serve as an entry. The exit connects to the lowest floor. The connection between the lowest floor and the second is formed by two paternoster lifts (7) provided with plates (9) connected with an endless conveyor belt (8). This belt functions in conjunction with two rotatable transport wheels (10). The connection between the third floor and the uppermost fourth floor is formed by two pivotable running planks (14). By pivoting these planks in the direction of the fourth floor, the third and fourth floors are mutually isolated. Since each floor can be isolated in relation to adjacent floors, the bird density on each floor, when required, can be determined.
