978,072. Universal joints. BENDIX CORPORATION. Aug. 21, 1963 [Oct. 8, 1962], No. 33106/63. Heading F2U. In a constant velocity ratio univerversal joint of the kind wherein a drum 10 and hub 18 respectively fast with shafts 14, 20 have grooves 28, 30 engaged by torque transmitting caged balls 32 which are maintained in the bisector plane between the shafts by a lever 38 that passes through the cage and has its ends socketed in the shafts, the grooves 28, 30 are straight and parallel to permit axial movement between the shafts. The axial movement is limited by a circlip 58 and the end 48 of the lever 38 abutting the end of a bore 50 in the shaft 60. As shown, the lever 38 is retained for axial movement with the shaft 20 by a ball 40 and socket 42 joint and a spherical surface 44 on the lever engages a cylindrical recess in the cage. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the lever 38 is retained for axial movement with the shaft 20 by its ball end engaging a hemispherical recess in the shaft and its spherical surface engaging a spherical surface on the cage. Specification 430,859 is referred to.
