In a finishing or coating composition (I) for rendering non-metallic surfaces sensitive to magnetism, comprising a synthetic resin binder (soluble or insoluble in water), a solvent and iron powder kept in dispersion by antiredeposition agents, either (a) the diluting solvent is an aliphatic hydrocarbon or mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons or (b) the binder is soluble or dispersible in water.
