Liquid crystal modulator incorporating an alternance of layers of polymerized material and liquid crystal material, notably for use as a polarizer

A liquid crystal modulator incorporates at least one alternance of layers of polymerized material (2.0 to 2.n+1) and layers of liquid crystal material (1.0 to 1.n). Each layer of liquid crystal material is enclosed between two layers of polymerized material of which the surfaces in contact with the liquid crystal have a molecular structure oriented along a direction. Some wedges (4.00, 4.01) are distributed in the liquid crystal layer between the layers of polymerized material. The liquid crystal material has an index of ordinary refraction (n0) and an index of extraordinary refraction (ne) and the polymerized material has an index of refraction (n) with a value essentially equal to that of the index of ordinary refraction or the index of extraordinary refraction of the liquid crystal material. An independent claim is also included for the fabrication of this liquid crystal modulator.
