The device has an electronic control unit (24) that measures temperature in a water reservoir (4) of an auxiliary power unit during the starting of a thermal engine. The unit (24) controls a valve (9) to direct exhaust gas from the engine to a heat exchanger (8) if the temperature is negative, where the exchanger is embedded in the reservoir. The heat yielded by the gas permits to liquefy ice contained in the reservoir. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a thawing method for a water reservoir of an auxiliary power unit of a fuel cell system (b) a motor vehicle comprising a thawing device.
