PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ADSL MODEM apparatus capable of obtaining robust communication quality by forcibly selecting each pilot tone according to its state, by solving a problem of the disabled transition of modulation-demodulation training because a proper pilot tone cannot sometimes be selected depending on a state of a line. SOLUTION: The ADSL MODEM apparatus 2 includes: a modulation-demodulation section 5; a G. hs section 4 for selecting a modulation-demodulation system estimated optimum in a present line state by using a G. hs tone in cooperation with the modulation-demodulation section 5; and a control section 6 for allowing the modulation-demodulation section 5 to execute a training sequence employing a pilot tone permitted in the selected modulation-demodulation system, detecting a failure of the training sequence, and allowing the modulation-demodulation section 5 to re-execute the training sequence by revising the pilot tone in response to the failure.
