PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for coating paper, having excellent coating operability, and providing a coated paper having excellent printing fitness such as gloss of white paper, gloss of print and a surface strength, providing the printing fitness in the wide range of printing speed, and particularly having high wet pick strength. SOLUTION: The composition for coating the paper comprises (A) a copolymer latex obtained by subjecting (a) 20-80 wt.% aliphatic conjugated dienic monomer, (b) 0.01-10 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and (c) 10-79.9 wt.% other monomers copolymerizable with the components (a) and (b) [with the proviso that (a)+(b)+(c)=100 wt.%] to emulsion polymerization, and having pH 2-6, and (B) a pigment as essential components.
