PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material producible at a low cost, having excellent processability and phtocatalytic activity and resistant to deterioration of the binder by the photocatalytic action without applying a particular processing for preventing the contact of the photocatalyst with the binder such as the support of the photocatalyst in the pores of a porous particle such as zeolite or the formation of an inorganic substance resistant to the decomposition with the photocatalyst such as apatite on the surface of the photocatalyst and dispensing with the sintering treatment of the coating material at a high temperature, i.e. 400-500°C. SOLUTION: The coating material is composed of (A) a hydrophobicized photocatalyst and (B) a compound resistant to the decomposition with the photocatalyst. As an alternative, the coating material is composed of (A) a hydrophobicized photocatalyst, (B) a compound resistant to the decomposition with the photocatalyst and (C) a resin for a coating material wherein the hydrophobicity of (A) the hydrophobicized photocatalyst and (B) the compound resistant to the decomposition with the photocatalyst before solidification is higher than the hydrophobicity of (D) the resin for the coating material. The invention further provides the coating additive composed of (A) the hydrophobicized photocatalyst and (B) the compound resistant to the decomposition with the photocatalyst.
