PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for driving a plasma display panel (PDP) capable of assuring an address operation margin and improving contrast characteristics and address discharge characteristics. SOLUTION: The method for driving the PDP equipped with an upper plate having an electrode pair consisting of a scan electrode Y and a sustain electrode Z and a lower plate having an address electrode is provided. The method includes the steps of: initializing a cell by continuously supplying a preliminary initialization waveform where a square wave pulse and a descending ramp waveform are coupled, a first ascending ramp waveform for write discharge, a first descending ramp waveform for erase discharge, a second ascending ramp waveform for write discharge, a second descending ramp waveform for erase discharge to the scan electrode Y and the sustain electrode Z; selecting the cell by supplying the scan pulse to at least one of the scan electrode Y and the sustain electrode Z by supplying data to the address electrode X; and performing display by alternately supplying the sustain pulses to the scan electrode Y and the sustain electrode Z.
