PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a serial printer which prevents an unnecessary increase of a driving force of a motor and a decrease in durability by performing urging by a proper urging force, depending on a printing condition or a load condition of a carrier 1, while having the function of suppressing a rattle between the carrier 1 and the guide shaft 2. SOLUTION: Constitutionally, the urging force of the carrier 1 against the guide shaft 2 can be switched. The urging force is switched depending on a printing mode, a moving velocity of the carrier 1, the weight of the carrier 1, and a use history of the printer. Energy cannot be unnecessarily imposed on the motor by preventing the application of an unnecessary load, while image quality is kept good by appropriately switching the biasing force for suppressing the rattle, depending on necessary image quality, the weight of the carrier 1 and a use state of the printer.
