PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-valued data conversion processing method for performing conversion processing of binary data used when it is recorded in an information recording medium into multi-valued data and a multi-valued data conversion processing apparatus with respect to a multi-valued data recording and reproducing apparatus such as an optical disk unit which records or reproduces the multi-valued data to or from the information recording medium such as an optical disk. SOLUTION: This multi-valuing apparatus is constituted of a shift register 1 which holds the binary data of continuous 4 (K=4) bit and inputs it in a binary/multi-valued conversion table 2, the binary/multi-valued conversion table 2 which converts the binary data of 4 bit inputted by the shift register 1 into 16 ways of multi-valued data patterns among 27 ways of multi-valued data patterns consisting of three pieces of three-valued multi-valued data and a shift register 3 which holds and outputs the multi-valued data of the multi-valued data pattern consisting of three pieces of multi-valued data converted by the binary/multi-valued data conversion table 2.
