PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To evaluate precisely the cut-off wavelength characteristics of a single mode optical fiber. SOLUTION: In a method for evaluating the cut-off wavelength characteristics of the single mode optical fiber, a wavelength variable measuring light generated from a single mode light source 11 enters an optical fiber (single mode optical fiber) 14 to be measured through an optical fiber 12 for excitation. At this time, the position where the measuring light enters the incident end face 14a of the optical fiber 14 to be measured is regulated by a finely adjusting base 13, and thereby, the exciting conditions of the optical fiber 14 to be measured can be changed. A remote emitting pattern from the emitting end face 14b of the optical fiber 14 to be measured is detected by a photodetecting element 15. And, the cut-off wavelength characteristics of the optical fiber 14 to be measured are evaluated by using the change of the remote emitting pattern to the measuring light wavelength.
