The powder charge 4 of a cartridge 1 for a boltfiring tool with or without automatic shell ejection is covered with a readily combustible disc or layer 5 of a powder which is a poor emitter of smoke, and the cartridge shell 3 is tapered in the direction of the shell opening 2, the taper extending about halfway along the total length of the cartridge without folding. The powder disc 5, preferably of nitrocellulose powder, may be stamped from a sheet made by rolling out a plastic powder mass. The tapered configuration of the shell 3 imparts a domed shape to the disc 5.
