PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charging device which avoids the problem that a foreign matter removed from a projection electrode by a cleaning member is prevented from remaining on the tip part of the electrode. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a sawtooth discharging member 2 having a plurality of metallic projection electrodes 1 linearly arranged, a cleaning member to remove a foreign mater depositing on the projection electrodes by moving while being brought into contact with the side face of the projection electrodes 1, and a moving means to reciprocally move the cleaning member along the longitudinal direction of the sawtooth discharging member 2. The both slopes 1a, 1b of each projection electrode 1 directing from the electrode base side X to the electrode top T make sharp anglesθ1,θ2, with respect to one direction h2 along the arrangement direction of electrodes. When the cleaning member moves in the direction h1 opposite to the direction h2 of the arrangement direction of the electrodes, the cleaning member is brought into contact with the side face of the electrode 1. When the cleaning member moves in one direction h2 of the arrangement direction of the electrodes, the member is separated from the side face of the projection electrodes 1.
