PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intake device for an internal combustion engine, reducing fuel consumption by producing the maximum pump loss reducing effect at all times independently of operating conditions. SOLUTION: The intake device for the internal combustion engine comprises an intake collective pipe, a plurality of intake pipes 3 each having one end connected to the intake collective pipe and the other end connected to a cylinder 1, butterfly valves 4 each provided in the intake pipe 3 for controlling the amount of air to be supplied from the intake collective pipe through the intake pipe into the cylinder 1 via an intake valve 2 provided in the cylinder 1, and space capacity adjusting means 5 each provided between the butterfly valve 4 and the intake valve 2 in communication with the intake pipe 3 for adjusting the capacity of a space between the butterfly valve 4 and the intake valve 2 corresponding to the air filling efficiency of each cylinder 1.
