PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effectively extremely excellent industrial production means in which a high-purity product can be produced in simple production process and high yield when producing 5-iodo-2-methylbenzoic acid by iodizing 2-methylbenzoic acid which is a raw material. SOLUTION: The method for producing 5-iodo-2-methylbenzoic acid comprises two steps of an iodination reaction step for iodizing 2-methylbenzoic acid under reaction conditions in whichβtype zeolite, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, iodine, and at least one oxidizing agent selected from iodic acid and periodic acid exist together and a refining step comprising sublimation, distillation, crystallization or a combination thereof as essential steps.
