<p>A system for paying parking fees in which a cellular telephone can be used by a client to send a short message (SMS) to a dedicated telephone number in order to pay the parking fees for a predetermined period of time is presented. The short message contains at least the license number of the vehicle, a code identifying the parking area and a password and is received at the system, and it is verified whether or not the client is a registered subscriber of the payment service. If the client is a registered subscriber, the monthly telephone bill will be debited according to the requested period of time. If the prepaid period is about to expire a short message is generated by the system and sent to the cellular telephone of the client to warn about the end of the prepaid time period or to request payment for an additional period of time. Furthermore, a parking inspector uses a cellular telephone and a personal digital assistant (PDA) to check whether or not payment has been made.</p> |
