PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant maintaining an excellent lubricating property under various using conditions, retaining the lubricating effect for a long time, and providing an excellent traveling property, abrasion resistance, durability, etc., a recording medium by using the same and a carboxylic acid-based compound constituting the same. SOLUTION: This lubricant is formed by using a carboxylic acid-based compound expressed by general formula (1) and having at least 2 carboxy groups and one ester bond [e.g. a compound expressed by chemical formula (1)] (wherein, Rf is a non-substituted or substituted, or saturated or unsaturated fluorine-containing hydrocarbon group or hydrocarbon group; Es is an ester bond; and R may be none but is a non-substituted or substituted, or saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group) as a constituting material, and the lubricant is held on the recording layer of the recording medium or within the recording medium.
