PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of detecting a fault caused therein on the basis of measured distance data. SOLUTION: A control circuit 5 obtains the difference between measured distance data and distance data measured in another measurement occasion to discriminate whether the difference between the distance data exists within a prescribed range. On the occurrence of a fault state in the projector, a first passive range finder 30 or a second passive range finder 40 detects data denoting an abnormal value in their measured distance data, and hence the projector can detect the abnormal state by comparing the measured distance data with the distance data measured in another measurement occasion.
