PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method relative to a new parameter suitable for use in non-intervention type speech quality assessment system. SOLUTION: A method of generating a parameter from a signal comprising a sequence of values measured from voiced portions of the signal at a sampling frequency, the parameter suitable for use in a quality assessment tool, comprises the steps of: (a) selection; (b) providing the sequence of frequency values; (c) generating a pitch frequency estimate; (d) selecting a plurality of portions having a frequency range of the sequence and a central frequency; (e) generating an average value; (f) generating a section parameter in dependence upon the difference between the average value for one portion of the sequence of frequency values and the average value for a subsequent portion of the sequence of frequency values; (g) repeating steps (a)-(f) and generating an average in dependence upon the plurality of the section parameters to generate the parameter.
