Pregastric esterase is obtained from the secretory tissue located on the tongue and/or oral cavity and/or throat tissue of milk-fed animals by grinding the tissue and mixing with 15% by weight of sodium chloride. The mixture is ground with equal parts of non-fat dry milk of 2% moisture content and dried at not more than 110 DEG F. to a moisture content of 7% or less.ALSO:A method of preventing or treating "scours" in young milk-fed animals comprises administering by mouth a pregastric esterase composition having a predetermined esterase activity level, of which the pregastric esterase component has been obtained from secretory tissue located in the tongue and/or oral cavity and/or throat tissue of milk-fed animals, the composition being administered from approximately the time the animal is capable of feeding after birth, i.e. 4 hours, and continuing for a maximum of six months. The pregastric esterase (see Division C3) is mixed with an edible diluent, especially non-fat milk solids, preferably containing less than 5% water, with or without the addition of dietary supplements and/or antibiotics. Specified are Vitamins A, B, B-complex and D and antibiotics such as penicillin, oxytetracycline and streptomycin. The invention also relates to compositions containing the pregastric esterase and an edible diluent with or without the further addition of dietary supplements and/or antibiotics. |
