981,426. Cooling reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 17, 1961 [June 9, 1960], No. 30057/64. Divided out of 981,423. Heading G6C. Fuel elements of a boiling water reactor are separated from the reactor coolant by a fluid heat transfer medium; the medium is contained separately from but is surrounded by and in heat transfer relation with the coolant. As shown, each reactor tube 15 contains three sheathed fuel elements and water which is circulated by pumps 24; the fuel elements are spaced by helical wires and are arranged differently in successive tubes to promote turbulance. Outside tubes 15 is the reactor coolant, which is also water. Alternatively, the medium inside the tubes may be an organic liquid. External circuits may be added for purification of the medium and for introduction into tubes 15 of neutron absorbing substances for control. Further control may also be provided by varying the circulation rate of the medium.
|
