PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more exactly decide whether a confidential document exists. SOLUTION: The quantity of features of a confidential document deciding pattern contained in image data of an original image is detected from the image data, and compared with a reference feature quantity stored in a memory area as a feature quantity of the confidential document deciding pattern to decide whether the identity is admitted between the detected feature quantity and the reference feature quantity. A correcting process (e.g., an automatic density correcting process by an automatic density corrector 213) effective for detecting the feature quantity of the confidential document deciding pattern detected by a detecting means from the image data is always applied to the image data that the feature quantity detecting process is to be executed, whether the user's selection exists or not, as a correcting process applied selectably by a user to the image data of the original image, thereby raising its detecting accuracy.
