PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal detector and a metal detection method for simultaneously finding the depth and area or diameter of a metal which is an object to locate. SOLUTION: This metal detector comprises a location head 1, an excitation current generator 5, and a signal processor 9. The location head 1 comprises a first loop-shaped exciting coil 2, a pair of circularly curved second exciting coils 3 and 3' point-symmetrically disposed outside the exciting coil 2 so that the center of curvature is positioned on a center line of the exciting coil 2, and a magnetic sensor 4 disposed on the center line of the exciting coil 2. The current generator 5 flows currents in reverse polarity to each other through the first exciting coil 2 and the second exciting coils 3 and 3'. The signal processor 9 detects the position of the metal based on a signal detected by the magnetic sensor 4. By sweeping a searched surface by the location head 1 and performing signal processing based on the signal of the magnetic sensor 4, position location on the object to locate can be accurately performed, a direction is determined in which the object exists.
