PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a load handling vehicle such as a reach stacker capable of securely supporting the weight of a counterweight and increasing the performance of a counterweight moving mechanism. SOLUTION: This load handling vehicle is so formed that the counterweight can be moved by a weight moving device 21 installed between the counterweight 5A and a vehicle body rear part 4a and a hydraulic cylinder 18. The weight moving device may be a rail 22 and a roller 23, a rail and a slide member, or a rack and a pinion. Also, when the counterweight is automatically moved backward, a container is raised by operating a lift for a short time by a controller, and when the axle load detected value of rear wheels detected by a load sensor is smaller than the predetermined value, such a processing that the counterweight is moved backward by operating the hydraulic cylinder is repeated until the axle load detected value exceeds the predetermined value, and then the raising operation of the container by the lift is continuously performed.
