PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To considerably reduce particularly the length of a multi-stage piston type cylinder provided with two or more pistons in series at a single common piston rod. SOLUTION: A first cylinder 15 and a second cylinder 18 are arranged in series through a partition wall block 19. The first piston 13 is fixed to the piston rod 20, while the second piston 16 can be detachably engaged with the piston rod 20 through a hook 37 of a piston lock mechanism 39. The extending operation of the piston rod 20 is performed by thrust with the first piston 13 as a pressure receiving face, and the second piston 16 is engaged with the piston rod 20 immediately before a stroke end to add thrust with the second piston 16 as a pressure receiving face to the piston rod 20.
