PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a method for producing powder for producing a transparent scandium oxide sintered compact without relying on an additive and without applying pressure during sintering, and a method for producing an additive-free transparent sintered compact by pressureless sintering by using the powder. SOLUTION: The method for producing the easily sinterable scandium oxide powder comprises forming a precipitate of basic scandium sulfate by mixing a solution of a scandium compound and a solution of ammonium sulfate in a molar ratio of scandium ions to ammonium sulfate of≥0.8, then washing/drying the precipitate, and calcining the dried precipitate at 900-1,250°C. The method for producing the transparent scandium oxide sintered compact comprises forming the powder obtained by the method mentioned above, and firing the formed body at≥1,600°C in such an atmosphere that the total of the partial pressure of gases such as nitrogen or argon, including an element which is very difficult to diffuse through scandium oxide, is≤0.03 MPa.
