PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the initial position of a stepping motor without providing an extra sensor, and moreover to also reduce the number of times for determining the initial position. SOLUTION: A disk device is provided with a pickup head 12 which is used to write or to read information to and from a disk 11, a stepping motor 13 which is used to drive the pickup head 12 to a prescribed position on the disk 11, a storage device 16 which stores the positional information of the pickup head 12, immediately prior to the exchange operation of the disk 11 is caused, or immediately before turning off the power supply of the disk device, and a controller 14 which controls the stepping motor 12, on the basis of the positional information of the pickup head 12 stored in the storage device 16.
