PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve control accuracy of combustion timing in premixing compression self-igniting combustion. SOLUTION: When operating an engine by self-ignition, pressure in each cylinder is measured to obtain an ignition crank angle at which heat generation amount becomes the maximum based on the value. Opening and closing timing of an intake valve and an exhaust valve is compensated in accordance with deviationΔθof both of ignition crank angle and target crank angle so that the ignition crank angle approaches the target crank angle at combustion time. That is, when the ignition crank angle is on a lag side more than the target crank angle, the timing is compensated to increase actual compression ratio and remaining gas in the cylinder, and when the ignition crank angle is on an advance side, the timing is compensated to reduce them.
