Microcapsules composed of a hydrophobic polymer shell enclosing a polar liquid or solution (the polymer being, for example, a cellulose ester or ether, a polyolefine, a polyvinyl resin, e.g. polystyrene or a polystyrene copolymer, P.V.C., polyvinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate/vinyl chloride copolymers, a natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. polyvinyl fluoride, a polyester such as a styrenated polyester or an alkyd resin) may be frozen dispersed in a coating medium and deposited on a substrate, e.g. of paper, plastic, cloth or glass. A specific example relates to coating plain paper and "Ozalid" (Registered Trade Mark) diazo paper with a dispersion of polystyrene microcapsules containing water in a solution of maleic resin ester in petroleum naphtha or mineral thinner to produce a paper useful to print on "Ozalid paper" or a self-developing diazo paper respectively.
