An alkoxylated siloxane copolymer consisting essentially of (a) 20 to 50% (by weight) of units of the general formula <FORM:0905776/IV(a)/1> (b) 20 to 50% of units of the formula <FORM:0905776/IV(a)/2> and (c) 10 to 40% of units of the formula <FORM:0905776/IV(a)/3> wherein each R is an alkyl radical, each R1 is an alkyl radical of 1 to 6 C atoms, each R2 is an unsaturated monovalent aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R3 is H or an acyl radical of a monobasic aliphatic acid of p 1 to 6 C atoms, R4 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, and in the copolymer n and m have an average value of from 1 to 2, n has an average value of from 0 to 1 and x has an average value of from 0,5 to 1,5, may be made by alcoholysis followed by hydrolysis and condensation of the corresponding silanes. The copolymers can be dissolved in organic solvents, emulsified in water and dissolved in minor proportions in water and the resulting liquids can be heated with catalytic amounts of boric acid to yield clear solutions which form tack-free films at temperatures below 100 DEG C. after evaporation of the solvent or water. In a typical example (1) ethanol was added to a benzene-ethyl acetate solution of CH2=CH.SiCl3, CH3.COOCH2.SiCl3 and (CH3)2SiCl2, with subsequent cooling and addition of water thereto; the solvent layer was separated and purified to yield a colourless oil which was then dissolved in toluene and refluxed with boric acid to give a solution suitable for treating glass. Uses: For treating glass plates, fibres or containers prior to coating with polyester resins. |
