PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable operation of premixed compression self-ignition combustion system internal combustion engine in a wide operation zone without increasing emission amount of nitrogen oxide and smoke. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine is provided with a combustion chamber composed of a cylinder head 130, a cylinder 142, and a piston 144, and a fuel injection mechanism provided with a low octane number fuel injection valve 82 directly injecting low octane number fuel in a combustion chamber, and a high octane number fuel injection valve 72 directly injecting high octane number fuel. The fuel injection mechanism performs fuel injection in a compression stroke in such a manner that low octane number fuel and high octane number fuel do not substantially overlap in the combustion chamber.
