PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus capable of obtaining a nice looking print form by automatically setting all characters to be printed in the same size when characters are printed on a printing medium by a proportional font using serial number performance, and to provide a printing method. SOLUTION: When printing in serial number performance, before starting printing, a length l in a line direction of a series of characters "the 38th" having the maximum succession characters "the 38" by an equal width font according to an input character number. Besides this length is compared with a length L in a line direction of a printing area S in those length l and a printing medium 52. After automatically setting the same character sizes to all series of character groups from the compared result, printing of the proportion font printing is going to start from the comparison result.
