[Also in Group XXII] Relates to a capacitor comprising a capacitance element 12 contained within a can 10 with a closed end 21 to which an external copper lead 24 is welded and an open end in which a bushing 40 supporting a conducting plug 34 is positioned. An external lead 36 is welded to the side of the plug remote from the capacitance element, which may be impregnated, while folded metal tabs are connected to the electrodes of the capacitor element; one, 20, being welded to the inside of the housing whilst the other, 30, is welded to the conductive plug. The bushing 40 may be of a synthetic thermosetting plastic and may be sealed by means of a rubber ring 46 fitting in a groove 44, with the rim of the can spun over on to the bushing. Alternatively, the bushing may be wholly rubber (Fig. 2, not shown). The invention may be applied in conjunction with either non-electrolytic or electrolytic capacitors, and in the case of electrolytic capacitors the can must have at least an inner surface that is not attacked by the electrolyte; aluminium, tantalum or silver being suitable. The can may have a multi-layered wall of different materials. An arrangement for carrying out the butt welding of the leads to the casing comprises two electrodes 61 and 62 (Fig. 4), the electrode 61 carrying an arrangement 66 into which the external lead 24 may be clamped. The electrode 62 has an anvil 64, on the head of which rests the internal electrode lead and the capacitor can. The arrangement is such that on bringing the electrode 61 down so as to carry out the welding process, the internal and external leads are simultaneously welded to the can. The capacitor element is thereafter inserted into the can and the other electrode tab 30 welded to the plug 34. This has previously had the external lead 36 attached to it and the bushing 40 moulded about it, so that after the tab 30 has been welded the bushing is inserted into the mouth of the can and the rim of the can spun over. A slightly different process is described for the situation where the metal plug extends completely through a rubber bushing (Figs. 2 and 5, not shown).
